Accounts and public submissions
Marketplace accounts store an email address, a securely hashed password and a site-specific account identifier. Account email addresses are not shown publicly. Session cookies support sign-in; a private recovery key supports password reset. Editor accounts are protected separately.
Approved listings publish the title, description, category, region, price and contact link you choose. Listings expire from the public board after 30 days; expiry does not automatically erase stored records. You may remove your own listings or request deletion by email. Moderation and account records are retained to operate the service and address abuse until removed or a deletion request is processed, subject to any applicable retention obligations.
Browser storage and essential services
Weather preferences, favourites, units and your privacy choice are stored in your browser. When you save community updates or choose a local desk, the update links and chosen community/region are also stored only in that browser. Saved updates use the current collected source content; we do not keep a separate copy of old appeal headlines. Use Clear saved updates in the community desk to remove your reading list. To reset the saved local desk, choose All communities and All regions, then Make this my local desk. Essential sign-in cookies and hosting/security request information are needed to operate the site. Hosting providers may process IP addresses, browser details, request URLs and security logs.
Optional traffic measurement
With your analytics permission, our traffic script loads from unknownroads.com to measure site visits. If the operator configures Google Analytics, it also loads only with that permission and can use cookies and process page URLs, device, browser and visit information. Optional traffic measurement is separate from your marketplace account. We do not intentionally send account email addresses, passwords or listing contact details to analytics.
Advertising
Direct sponsor banners are labelled and link to the sponsor. If Google advertising is configured, its scripts load only after you allow advertising. Google and its partners may use cookies or similar storage and process identifiers, IP addresses and browsing information to serve and measure ads. No Google ad requests are made when advertising is disabled. Additional consent requirements may apply before advertising is activated in some regions. Your choice
Use Privacy choices at the bottom of any page to allow or decline analytics and advertising separately. Both default to off. Changing your choice reloads the page to stop optional scripts. Previously set third-party cookies may remain until you clear them through your browser or the provider’s controls. Essential account functions remain available if you decline.
Other websites and images
Our current illustrations are served by NL News. Opening the marine map loads map tiles from OpenStreetMap and weather images from ECCC GeoMet. Those providers receive ordinary web requests, including your IP address and the page origin. The map uses a selected public community, not your device location; we do not request GPS access. Their privacy practices apply to those requests. Publisher photographs are not automatically loaded. Ko-fi, publishers, sponsors and other linked services have their own privacy practices. We collect no payments directly on this site. Service providers may process data outside Canada.
